TV channels target Pacific audience Freeview Satellite - Terrestrial
Television New Zealand and TV3 have revealed they will launch channels aimed at Pacific viewers within a year.
The channels would target a potential audience of 250,000 Pacific people in New Zealand, then countries across the region, Radio new Zealand reported. TVNZ director of Maori and Pacific programming, Paora Maxwell, said his company's proposal included news, entertainment and sport. A director of the TV3 venture, Innes Logan said the project would probably start with a limited number of screen hours but once content and viewers increased there would be more variety.

From Phil Gray Aussie Sat TV petition
Many of you will be as frustrated as I am by the bureaucratic process required to access free-to-air satellite TV. The need for authorisation, and re-authorisation at regular intervals, often leaves you wondering whether it is really worth all the effort.
It seems to me that we Aussies ought to be able to access Australian satellite channels wherever we live, or wherever we travel. Without the nonsense. I was spurned into action by Imparja's recent decision to no longer authorise access to travellers at all. They will only provide service to permanent residences within their broadcast zone. Their actions may well be reasonable in view of the cost of administering the authorisation process, so I am not going to cast stones at them.
But I have decided to try and do something about it and have launched a petition for "deregulation of free-to-air sateliite TV", and to tackle the legislative environment head on. I am aware of the arguments for restricted broadcast zones, but in an age when it is becoming increasingly common to view TV on the internet from overseas, it makes no sense to restrict Aussies free access to Australian TV.
The aim is to present the petition to the Federal Minister for Communications during 2009.

Intelsat to Refresh its Satellite Fleet Serving the Asia-Pacific Region
11 June 2009
Intelsat, Ltd., has provided further details with respect to its current fleet investment plan, which is expected to result in a significant improvement in the types and quantities of satellite capacity available to media, networking and government customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
Intelsat expects to launch 11 satellites between now and the end of 2012, five of which will provide new or replacement capacity in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific build includes the acceleration of replacement satellites for two core roles and one new satellite that increases capacity for media and networking
customers and addresses defense-related opportunities in the region.

The Intelsat 18 satellite, to be located at 180º E, will provide continuity and enhanced performance in C- and Ku-band for network, voice and video services to the Pacific Islands and offer connectivity to the Western United States. The Intelsat 18 satellite will replace the Intelsat 701 satellite.
The Intelsat 19 satellite, to be located at 166º E, will feature increased Ku-band capacity optimized for Direct-to-Home (DTH) and network services applications in Australia. The satellite’s C-band capacity will provide enhanced performance capacity for distribution of international video content throughout Asia-Pacific with reach to the Western United States. The Ku-band payload will also support demand for mobility and enterprise network applications across the region. The Intelsat 19 satellite will replace the Intelsat 8 satellite.

In addition to the fleet program, Intelsat continues to invest in its ground network infrastructure, expanding customer access to Intelsat’s Asia-Pacific assets. An upgrade at Intelsat’s Paumalu Teleport in Hawaii improved fiber diversity and upgraded antenna facilities to expand accessibility and redundancy on Intelsat’s Pacific Ocean satellites, enhancing services for media customers. Intelsat also expanded its GlobalConnex Network Broadband Managed services, adding hubs at KT Corporation’s teleport facilities in South Korea.
“Intelsat has served the Asia-Pacific region for more than four decades, and the acceleration and expansion of our investments with respect to these satellites and our ground network reflect our commitment to providing our customers with a growth path that supports their strategic objectives,” said David Ball, Intelsat’s Regional Vice President, Asia-Pacific. “With globalization of content, the increasing importance of HD programming, further deployment of enterprise and broadband services and mobile applications, and continuing popularity of DTH television services, Intelsat will have the connectivity and capacity to serve its customers in the region and as they distribute their content around the globe.”

Australia's newest satellite - Optus D3 - is fully operational
13 Oct 2009
Optus announced today that Australia's newest state-of-the-art satellite, Optus D3, is fully operational after successfully completing extensive in-orbit testing ahead of schedule.
Following the successful launch of the Optus D3 Satellite on 22 August 2009 (AEST) from French Guiana, Optus has now completed a number of crucial tests at its geo-stationary 156°E location. D3 will complement Optus' existing four satellites providing services across Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.
Vicki Brady, Managing Director of Optus Wholesale and Satellite said "I am delighted to confirm that our newest satellite, Optus D3, is fully operational, increasing our satellite fleet capacity by more than 30 per cent.
"Successfully launching and operating satellites is a complex and precise business but it's something Optus has been doing now for more than 25 years.
"The Optus D3 satellite has completed a rigorous amount of testing throughout August and September 2009. We've been very pleased with the test results, which demonstrate the satellite's readiness to provide quality broadcast services to Australian homes and businesses. Because things have gone so smoothly, Optus D3 is ready for service ahead of schedule.
"Now that Optus' dedicated and experienced team of satellite experts have successfully tested and configured the Optus D3 satellite, our customers can begin their own testing in preparation for service commencement in the near future.
"Not only will D3 provide new business opportunities for Optus, it will also allow our customers to provide new and advanced digital services to their customers across Australia and New Zealand," Ms Brady said.
FOXTEL recently announced that the new Optus D3 satellite will enable them to offer customers 30 additional channels, including 10 additional HD channels, enhanced navigation features, and significantly more interactive and on-demand features.
Optus' satellite fleet reaches all corners of the country delivering subscription television, free-to-air TV, voice, internet and radio services making it an important source of news and entertainment for the entire population.
The successful launch and operation of D3 demonstrates Optus' commitment to keeping Australia and New Zealand at the forefront of satellite technology as we continue to invest in bringing communications capability, such as high definition television, to more households.

Digital Television Australia-Wide
4 January 2010
The Rudd Government will implement a satellite service to provide digital television to viewers in regional blackspot areas.
"All regional Australians will now receive the same television services as people in the cities," said the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.
"This is a fantastic outcome for people in regional Australia, many of whom have received limited television services for many years."
"This historic decision will dramatically improve the choice and quality of television services for regional Australia as we move towards digital switchover."
"For the first time all free-to-air digital television services, including the original three commercial and two national channels, as well as new digital services such as ABC2, ABC3, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO and ONE HD, will be available to all Australians, no matter where they live."
"The satellite service will provide regional viewers with access to the local news currently broadcast in their TV licence area via a dedicated local news channel."
While the final cost of the digital satellite broadcasting service will be determined following negotiations between broadcasters and satellite service providers, the Government is committing $40 million per year over the four-year forward estimates to build and operate the service, for the potential benefit of up to 247,000 households across Australia. This is an ongoing Government commitment.
Under an agreement reached with all television broadcasters across Australia, broadcasters will upgrade more than 100 existing regional analog ‘self-help’ transmission facilities to operate in digital, while the Government will fully fund and build a new digital satellite broadcasting service for regional viewers who are unable to receive digital television from those facilities.
The measures are part of Australia’s ongoing switchover to digital-only television and will be in place before analog services are switched off in each regional broadcast license area.
Viewers who currently rely on ‘self-help’ sites that will be upgraded by broadcasters under this agreement will simply need to install a high definition set-top-box to access a full suite of digital television channels.
Any regional households not able to receive digital television from the upgraded ‘self-help’ sites will be served by the new satellite, which will also carry the full suite of digital channels. In order to access the new satellite service, these households will need to install a satellite dish.
"The Government will provide a satellite conversion subsidy to eligible households currently served by ‘self-help’ transmission sites which are not upgraded to digital by the broadcasters," Senator Conroy said.
"This landmark agreement would not be possible without the cooperation of Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters and I would like to acknowledge their constructive approach to digital switchover."
Senator Conroy said that the Government will be writing to ‘self-help’ transmission licensees detailing the new measures as well as providing further information to local communities.
The Government is currently consulting with broadcasters to identify the list of ‘self-help’ sites to be upgraded to digital for announcement in the first half of 2010.
The list will include new digital terrestrial transmitters at Underbool and Ouyen in the Sunraysia/Mildura region, the first license area to switch to digital-only television. The satellite service for the Sunraysia/Mildura region is expected to commence prior to 30 June 2010, when analog television services are due to be switched off in that licence area.
